Generic limits for cars and motorcycles in 2026: motorway/autovía 120 km/h (minimum 60 km/h); road for motor vehicles 100 km/h; conventional road 90 km/h; through-road (travesía) generally 50 km/h; urban with two or more lanes per direction 50 km/h; urban with one lane per direction 30 km/h; shared-space urban (no separate carriageway/sidewalk) 20 km/h.
New drivers do not have a special speed cap (the old 80 km/h interurban limit was removed in 2011). They do have a lower alcohol limit (see Alcohol topic).
From 1 October 2026: when overtaking a cyclist on an interurban road, you must reduce speed by at least 20 km/h below the road’s limit. Marked here as applying from that date.
