The DGT teaches the 2-second rule as a practical method: when the vehicle ahead passes a fixed point, count “one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two”; if you reach that point sooner, you are too close. In bad conditions (rain, fog, fatigue, night) extend to 3–4 seconds.
Separately, RGC article 95 sets a legal minimum when you are not intending to overtake, outside built-up areas: at least 100 metres or a 4-second interval. For vehicles over 3,500 kg or longer than 10 metres, the minimum is 50 metres unless overtaking or traffic density prevents it.
